Barry John Gennard Another excellent release from Juan Pablo Mazzola and Baby Scream. Sad Balloons is a brilliant mix of new original, old demo and great cover songs. Opening track, Britney Has Left The Building, really caught me off guard as its the heaviest and most aggressive riff that I've heard from Juan in years if not ever. Great song too. excellent from beginning to end and well worth checking out!!!

about

From Valencia Spain Baby Scream is a music project orchestrated and led by Juan Pablo Mazzola who first released ‘Lost Balloons’ but now he’s found some and they’re sad but the music contained therein is far from sad (at times).  Kicking off with the T Rex influenced ‘Britney Has Left The Building’ it’s a full blooded slice of Glam rock to kick off this collection of demos and remixes.
‘Cheap Perfume’ is a sombre acoustic song that’s in keeping with the collection title. but it’s then followed by a very demo sounding tribute to Nirvana as ‘Fuck This’ is like a cassette recording from a band rehearsal and as if by magic the next tune is indeed a Nirvana cover of ‘I Hate Myself And Want To Die’ that’s recorded using a piano as the lead instrument.  Sounding more like a lost Bowie track from the 70s.  Then to follow it up with a dreamy demo of The Demon Gene Simmons ‘See You Tonight’ which is a trippy journey sounding more like a twisted pop song.
The songs take a more sombre turn toward the cover of cool hand luke (Mazzolas favourite film apparently) ‘Plastic Jesus’ which segs into a nice acoustic strum of ‘Underworld’  with its dreamy vocal but this is almost twenty years old - RPMOnline (U.K.)

BABY SCREAM is back with a collection of old demos, covers and songs that were never used. Opener “Britney Has Left The Building” is a kickass powerpop song with vocals reminding a bit of DINOSAUR JR., a song that was released on a Swedish compilation in 2016. “Cheap Perfume” is an acoustic demo with a very soothing atmosphere while “Fuck This!” is a crazy grunge song with NIRVANA guitars. Speaking of NIRVANA, you’ll also find an interesting cover of “I Hate Myself and I Want To Die.” The cover of Gene Simmons‘ “See You Tonite” has been reworked as a psychedelic pop song and it works really well while the new version of “Mars” displays more BOWIE and BEATLES influences and “Underworld” has a bit of a T.REX/Nikki Sudden vibe. “Plastic Jesus” is a folk song that Paul Newman sang in “Cold Hand Luke and it has been given a cool RAMONES treatment. Finally, “Guts” closes the album in a beautiful way, mixing superb pop and electronic elements. If you haven’t heard BABY SCREAM before, this compilation record will work well as a first encounter. - Veglam (France)

Argentinian power pop musician Juan Pablo Mazzola did a bit of house cleaning and has just released Sad Balloons, an album with a bunch of covers, alternate mixes, early demos, and singles to keep him in the picture. Some of the material from the early days comes close to punk and hard rock.
The rollicking Britney Has Left The Building was previously released in 2016 on Flavour Of The Month via Swedish label Ice Cream Man Power Pop and More Records, way before the current shit storm with her father in the midst of it, with his dubious role as her conservator. Including it as a prime example of serendipity. Mazzola is serious about the current state of the world and it became the main theme of the album. He channels a really angry Kurt Cobain with the brash Fuck This, before turning it down a notch with a subdued cover of Nirvana's I Hate Myself and I Want To Die.
Plastic Jesus, a song by The Goldcoast Singers, reached the mainstream thanks to a scene in Cool Hand Luke starts out as an Americana before making a sharp left and go mental a la the Sex Pistols with a touch of the Ramones thrown in for good measure.
He closes the album with an alternate mix of his 2020 single Guts, wrapping it in harsh sounding electronics, making it even darker than the original. - Here Comes The Flood (The Netherlands)
