about

On their 8th album Secret Place Baby Scream have taken some fairly common power pop influences and either by design or by accident they've managed to create something entirely unexpected. Most of that originality stems from Juan Pablo Mazzola's vocals, which occasionally resemble John Lennon at his most hushed but more often than not remind me of the Promise Ring's Davey von Bohlen (circa their moody Wood/Water album). There's a yearning fragility to his voice, a sense of impending heartbreak that colors every song. - Pearl Before Swine (Canada)

These guys are from Argentina and they are singing in English like they were born in LA.  Huge props! Sweet vocals, nice guitars, overall nice sound. - Sonic Shocks (U.K.)

I've come to the conclusion that the sun must shine a lot in Argentina.  That has to be the explanation for Baby Scream's obvious preference for the glory days of pop and rock as the source of inspiration for his latest album "Secret Place". No matter how you look, or indeed listen, to it, "Secret Place" ends up being a celebration of the enduring power of the pop song with Juan Pablo Mazzola (for it is he that leads us on this trip up a sunny avenue) making his case in under three minutes per song. The overall impression is nonetheless overwhelmingly positive. "Secret Place", therefore, is an upbeat record for downbeat times and, accordingly, makes you wish that the sun would shine forever. - Blues Bunny Music Reviews (U.K.)

One of the great bands to emerge from Argentina over the years has gone relatively unknown to the rest of the world. Baby Scream displays some wonderful characteristics throughout this latest release, it has elements of folk, punk, rock and melody, intermingled with some beautiful love songs. The Only One's listening to this, I think my comparison was right on the money. Juan Pablo Mazzola heads up the operation, with his Peter Perrett-a-like vocal style and beautifully arranged writing style, with songs such as 'The Last Call', 'Hit & Run" almost 'Mod', british 1960's arrangements, weller-esque beats carry them. "Secret Place" embodies a laid-back type of rock 'n' roll that aims to charm with stories of childhood memories. The album has an overpowering sense of dreamlike wonder. - Uber Rock (U.K.)

All songs on Secret Place were written and recorded within two weeks and once again shows his love for melodic Seventies soft rock and power pop. Juan Pablo Mazzola is a melancholic story teller, singing about childhood (Bad Seed) nightmares Eating My Face and his favorite city (London Sun). Given the limited time span to deliver the goods, there was a fair change that the result would have come off sounding rushed and unfinished. Mazzola, a seasoned recording artist, was apparently totally at ease throughout and came up with ten concise pop songs. - Here Comes The Flood (The Netherlands)

"Secret Place" shattered all the South American stereotypes for me. What we have here is possibly ground breaking stuff. There are so many influences I could pick out from the brilliantly penned songs of Juan Pablo Mazzola and the guys. Theres a huge experimental feel to the album with musical and vocal influences from John Lennon through to the white stripes. In fact, Its a wild bubbling melting pot of generations of iconic vocal influences and the musical side to the album ranges from songs you could melt into a comfy chair and chill to and the most foot tapping, in your head sing alongs you could ever imagine. The keyboard seems to be the backbone to the album, Its brilliantly played and compliments Juans 'Lennon like' vocals. - Fit 4 Talent (U.K.)
